If you've ever been to Greece, you must have savored on the scrumptious dessert called loukoumades. If not, drop everything you're doing and catch the next flight that you can. It's so worth it, we can assure you. Last year during our trip to Greece, we were tantalized by something we never knew existed – loukoumades. Even when I mention that word today, it makes Sam's eyes shine a little brighter, and his face cracks an excited smile.
What are loukoumades? In one word, heaven; heaven for your taste buds. Picture this: made to order, small fried dough balls that resemble mini donuts but so much fluffier, lighter, and crunchier. And it doesn't stop there. The toppings are equally mouthwatering. The traditional recipe calls for these pastries to be soaked in honey and coated with cinnamon and sesame seeds. The more modern version (my favorite) is drenched in Nutella cream and topped with ice cream. Yes, get ready for ecstasy. Yum, yum, yum.
Some of the other delicious toppings include fruit syrups, chocolate, hazelnut, and vanilla creams, coated with different kinds of nuts, coconut, and many other ingredients.
The loukoumades are usually sold in specialty stores where you observe the entire production process that visually entices your taste buds for the pleasure they are about to experience. Watching these delicacies being made was almost as enjoyable as eating them.
The traditional loukoumades originate from ancient Greece and Rome. The word loukouma, however, is borrowed from Turkish lokma, which means "mouthful."
During our time in Greece, we tried loukoumades in Paros, Napflio, and Athens. We listed the locations below which are all highly recommended by us.
1. Napflio – Pergamónto, 1 Komninou, Nafplio 211 00, Greece
2. Paros - Loukoumades "To Paradosiako" Naousa; 844 01 Páros, Cyclades
3. Athens – Lukumades, Aiolou 21, Athina 105 51, Greece
