Del Marcos Hotel – A Sunseeker's Oasis in Palm Springs

Winter in San Diego, California, is a cakewalk compared to cities like Chicago, but still, winter it is. It requires weekend migrations to warmer, rejuvenating destinations. One of Sam's and my favorite destinations is Palm Springs, with its good vibes, restaurants of endless cuisines, and blue, cloudless skies. And the Del Marcos Hotel was about to become one of our favorite spots for some R&R.

Escape the Winter Blues: A Weekend Getaway to Del Marcos Hotel in Palm Springs

We left San Diego early on a "cold" winter morning. I could tell Sam was as excited as I was. He sped down the highway, humming to his favorite holiday tune, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." He joked that he's not only a driver but also a DJ, changing radio stations for my liking. "Can I also serve you a cappuccino?" he teased, as I was already in relaxation mode for the weekend.

Arriving at Del Marcos: A Stylish 50's Atmosphere and Desert Modernism

Del Marcos Hotel sits in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. The hotel's orange sign promises a stylish 50's atmosphere. Perfect, I'm so ready, I thought to myself as Sam parked the car on the side street. Something told me right away that this hotel and I were going to get along just fine.

Relaxing by the Focal Point: The Design and Beauty of Del Marcos Hotel's

We arrived a tad early for an official check-in to our room. But the pool was open for business and calling my name. Even though the hotel had guests, the pool was miraculously vacant. We set up camp right at the water's edge, and I dipped my toe in. It exceeded all expectations and was so inviting. I immersed myself in the clear, heated saltwater heaven. Jingle bells of joy were ringing in my head and through the speakers around the pool.

The pool serves as the hotel's focal point, designed by architect William F. Cody in 1947. It was his first independent commission that would later gain him recognition for his contribution to Desert Modernism. The structure emphasizes Cody's affinity for angles, light, and open spaces. The material used is local stone and redwood, which comes from the desert in the scenic backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains.

Eames Poolside Villa: A Spacious and Modern Oasis at Del Marcos Hotel

Each room has a name instead of a number. Ours was the Eames Poolside Villa, one of the larger and sunnier ones on the property. The room offers an excellent view of the pool, mirrored walls, and a modern apartment's furnishings, including a large patio with a stress-relieving tub and firepit. It provides everything one would need for a relaxing and comfortable weekend. The property is also sparkling clean.
